Some Things to Consider If You Want to Do Teeth Whitening While Pregnant

What better way to compliment to beautiful glow of pregnancy than a beautiful whiter smile? Many pregnant women question whether or not they can continue or start teeth whitening while pregnant. While there are not conclusive studies that it is harmful to do so, it is just best to be cautious and stop any whitening treatments as soon as you discover you are pregnant.

Many people also wonder if it is not safe to do teeth whitening while pregnant, is it safe to do on a normal basis? The answer is yes. The safety concerns are not necessarily for the mother as much as it is for the growing fetus. Especially in the early stages of pregnancy, the fetus is still developing and any changes can have an adverse affect on the baby. During the teeth whitening process, it is completely normal to swallow some of the gel, so doctors are concerned that the gel ingested might some how effect the baby. That is why if you go to a dentist to have this done, the dentist will ask you if you are pregnant or if there is a chance you could be pregnant. During the early stages of pregnancy, you can never be too careful.

Another common question is if teeth whitening while pregnant is dangerous, how about for women who are breastfeeding? This answer will vary from doctor to doctor, but you should not be discouraged from whitening your teeth if you are breastfeeding. Once you have had the baby, you still need to be careful about what you are ingesting, but you can still whiten your teeth safely. Over the counter teeth whitening gels are harmless and are not potent enough to harm anyone, let alone harm a baby through breast milk. The main ingrediant of teeth whitening gel is peroxide and there have been no conclusive studies that the peroxide will harm the baby.

Along with pregnancy, there are whole host of things that you cannot participate in for the health of the growing baby, teeth whitening while pregnant is one of them. So if you are planning on becoming pregnant or suspect that you are, simply don’t worry about a whiter smile until after the baby is born.
